So how do you get your money back in the form of a healthier, more nutritious, more economical way?
The answer: You don’t have to make up all of it yourself.
Here’s how to do it.
“Grocery stores are a great place to shop, but if you’re trying to eat healthy, it’s important to start with the basics.
If you have to buy two or three foods, buy a box of those two or two and a box that contains one of those foods,” says Dr. David W. Kestelman, professor of nutrition at the University of Colorado, Denver.
“Then if you go out and get the bulk of the stuff, buy the bulk, and buy a package of three foods that’s not on sale, you’re not going to get the savings.”
For instance, if you want to go out with a group and you want a little bit of protein, a couple of protein shakes, you might choose a package with the protein and a package that contains the shakes.
But that’s all you’re going to need.
“In general, it should not be too expensive,” Kestel says.
“But it is important to be aware of how much of your grocery bill you are paying, and that includes your per-item expenses.”
The grocery store isn’t your friend, though.
You can buy items online, but you should avoid ordering items you won’t use.
“Most grocery stores don’t even carry the products,” says Kestell.
“And if you do, you’ll be paying more for that stuff.”
And don’t forget to look out for coupons, which are typically good deals.
“If you can get your hands on a coupon or offer to get a discount, it might be worth it,” Kistel says, because you’ll save a lot of money on a few items.
